TURKEY DISPLEASED BY KURDISH UNITY

Political scientist Prof. Dr. Dogu Ergil has said regarding the crossing of the Peshmerga into Kobane through Turkey and the welcoming of the Peshmerga by the Kurds on the streets, that Turkey is displeased by this; it believes this Kurdish unity will turn into a demand for secession.

Ergil said "despite political differences among the Kurds, there is a sense of unity and Kurdish solidarity. The maintenance of this will depend on the developments in Syria and Iraq".

Ergil also said that the fact that the Kurds have come from somewhere else to defend Kobane has given the message that the Kurds are willing to defend themselves without the help of anyone.

Regarding Turkey's unhappiness of this emerging Kurdish unity Ergil said:

"There is a belief that this emerging Kurdish unity will finally lead to a demand for independence by the Kurds. This is why Turkey is not too happy about this. Turkey also does not want their to be an autonomous region outside of its borders. And even there is to be a Kurdish autonomous region in Syria, it would like it to be under its control, in other words close to the Erbil administration."
